Why do prayers for healing sometimes go unanswered? This question troubles many believers when they see believers pray for sick people, but nothing happens. The answer isn't that God refuses to heal or doesn't care about their suffering. Instead, the issue often stems from a lack of understanding about how the faith works. Now before we answer the question, lets understand how the Holy Spirit operates.
π₯ Three Ways the Holy Spirit Operates
The first way is the Holy Spirit with you.
In this stage, the Holy Spirit serves as your guide, helping you make decisions and navigate life's challenges. Jesus himself promised this guidance in π John 14:16, saying "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever."
This divine guidance isn't just a New Testament concept but has been God's pattern throughout history. The prophet Isaiah described it beautifully in π Isaiah 30:21 "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, This is the way; walk in it."
From the wilderness wanderings to the early church, God's Spirit has consistently directed His people, and π Romans 8:14 reminds us that "those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God."
Biblical Examples of Spirit-Led Direction
π Nehemiah 9:20 β "You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst." The Spirit was with Israel in the wilderness, guiding and instructing them from the very beginning.
π Matthew 4:1 β "Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil." Even Jesus himself was directed by the Holy Spirit's guidance.
π Acts 8:29 β "The Spirit told Philip, 'Go to that chariot and stay near it.'" The Spirit led Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch, directing him where to go and what to do.
These examples demonstrate the consistent pattern of God's Spirit actively guiding His people throughout both the Old and New Testaments, continuing this divine direction in believers' lives today.
The second way involves the Holy Spirit in you,
This focuses on personal spiritual growth and transformation. This is when your character begins to reflect Christ's nature - you become more humble, loving, caring, and genuinely helpful to others, always keeping Jesus at the center of your life. Paul describes this transformation in π Galatians 5:22-23, listing the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Biblical Examples of Spirit-Led Transformation
π Ezekiel 36:27 β "And I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules." God promises to place His Spirit within us to enable righteous living.
π John 20:21-22 β "Again Jesus said, 'Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.' And with that he breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" Jesus personally imparted the Holy Spirit to his disciples for their mission and transformation.
π Romans 8:9-11 β "If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christβ¦ But if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you." The Spirit's presence is essential for belonging to Christ and experiencing spiritual life.
π 1 Corinthians 6:19 β "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you?" Our bodies become sacred dwelling places for God's Spirit.
These examples demonstrate how the Holy Spirit works internally to transform believers, making them more Christ-like in character and empowering them for God's purposes.
The third way is the Holy Spirit upon you,
This is where supernatural miracles occur. Now this is very important because this is for others, this empowerment is very essential for miraculous works.
Jesus himself demonstrated this when "the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him" at his baptism (π Luke 4:18-19), after which he began performing miracles.
The disciples experienced this dramatic shift on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon them with power (π Acts 2:1-4). Immediately afterward, Peter preached with such authority that three thousand people were converted, and they began performing miraculous signs and wonders (π Acts 2:43).
Stephen, one of the seven chosen deacons, was described as "full of God's grace and power" and performed "great wonders and signs among the people" (π Acts 6:8) because the Spirit was upon him.
Biblical Examples of Spirit-Empowered Ministry
π Judges 14:6 β "The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him, and he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have killed a young goat." Samson received supernatural physical strength through the Spirit's power.
π Judges 3:10 β "The Spirit of the Lord came on him, so that he became Israel's judge and went to war. The Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into his hands." Othniel was empowered for leadership and military victory.
π Judges 6:34 β "Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him." Gideon received courage and leadership authority through the Spirit.
π 1 Samuel 10:6 β "The Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person." Saul was transformed and empowered for prophetic ministry.
π 1 Samuel 16:13 β "So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David." David received ongoing supernatural empowerment from his anointing.
π Matthew 3:16, Luke 3:22 β "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him." Jesus received the Spirit's anointing before beginning his miracle ministry.
These examples reveal a consistent biblical pattern, supernatural ministry always requires the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Yet there is an important truth we must not overlook faith is also essential. If the person in need of healing does not believe that Jesus can heal them, then no amount of prayer will be effective.
Even Jesusβ miraculous power was, at times, limited by peopleβs lack of faith. In His hometown, He could perform only a few healings because of their unbelief (Mark 6:5-6; Matthew 13:58), showing that faith is often essential for Godβs miracles to manifest.
These passages highlights an important principle: God's power is limitless, but He often chooses to work in ways that respond to human faith.
β¨ Two Clear Methods of Healing in Scripture
When we look at the Bible, healing typically occurred through either faith or Godβs sovereign will.
1) Faith as the Key to Healing
Healing often took place when the sick person or someone praying for them has genuine faith in God's power. This isin't just hope or wishful thinking, but deep trust that God could heal them. Jesus made this clear in -
π Matthew 9:29Β - "According to your faith let it be done to you."
π Mark 11:24Β - "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."
π James 5:14-16Β - "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up."
We also see that Holy Spirit's anointing is also essential for healing ministry, In the book of Acts, we see that the Holy Spirit was specifically poured out on Jesus's disciples, giving them power to heal the sick and cast out demons. When they later chose seven deacons, these men also received this same power and performed similar miracles.
Biblical Examples of Faith-Based Healing
Naaman's Leprosy Healing (π 2 Kings 5:1-14) - Naaman, a Syrian commander, obeyed Elisha's instructions to wash seven times in the Jordan River despite initial hesitation. 2 Kings 5:14 - "He went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy." His obedience and faith in God's prophet brought complete healing.
The Centurion's Servant (π Matthew 8:5-13) - The centurion showed remarkable faith in Jesus's authority, believing Jesus could heal from a distance with just a word. π Matthew 8:10,13 - "When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said... 'Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. So I say to you, go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.' And the servant was healed at that moment." Jesus marveled at his faith and granted immediate healing.
The Woman with Bleeding (π Matthew 9:20-22) - She had suffered for twelve years with no medical solution, yet she believed that simply touching Jesus's garment would heal her. πMatthew 9:22 - "Jesus turned and saw her. 'Take heart, daughter,' he said, 'your faith has healed you.' And the woman was healed at that moment." Her faith activated the healing power instantly.
Healing through Peterβs Shadow (π Acts 5:15β16) β Crowds brought the sick into the streets, laying them on beds and mats in hope that even Peterβs shadow might fall on them as he passed by. π Acts 5:16 β "Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed." The Spiritβs power worked through Peter in extraordinary ways.
Healing through Paulβs Handkerchiefs (π Acts 19:11β12) β God performed extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that touched him were taken to the sick. π Acts 19:12 β "Their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them." Faith in Godβs power extended healing even through simple objects connected to Paul.
2) Healing Through God’s Will
Sometimes healing happened not because of the person's faith, but purely according to God's sovereign will. In these cases, God's power alone brought complete restoration:
The Lame Man at Bethesda (π John 5:1-9) β After thirty-eight years of suffering, a man lay beside the pool of Bethesda. Jesus approached him and asked, βDo you want to get well?β Without any demonstration of faith, Jesus spoke healing into his life. π John 5:8-9 β βThen Jesus said to him, βGet up! Pick up your mat and walk.β At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.β His restoration was the result of Godβs sovereign will.
The Lame Man at the Temple Gate (π Acts 3:1-10) β A beggar who was lame from birth sat at the temple gate asking for money. Instead, Peter declared healing in the name of Jesus. π Acts 3:6-7 β βThen Peter said, βSilver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.β Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the manβs feet and ankles became strong.β The miracle occurred before the man showed any faith, purely through Godβs power.
The Man Born Blind (π John 9:1-7) β Jesus encountered a man blind from birth and declared that his condition was not due to sin but so that Godβs works might be displayed. π John 9:6-7 β βAfter saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the manβs eyes. βGo,β he told him, βwash in the Pool of Siloam.β So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.β The healing was initiated entirely by Jesus, not by the manβs faith.
These examples demonstrate that while faith is often a catalyst for healing, God's sovereign will is ultimate. Divine healing flows from His power alone - sometimes in response to faith, and sometimes according to His perfect plan and timing, regardless of human faith or expectation.
βοΈ A Humble Request
Many believers today assume they can lay hands on others and expect healing simply because they have faith; however, they often forget to point people to Jesus first. True healing begins when the sick person or their family believes in Jesus.
Take time to share God's incredible love. Explain how Jesus, the Son of God, came from heaven, took on human flesh, and redeemed humanity. Speak of His mercy, His care, and His faithfulness toward all who call on Him. Help them understand that when they place their trust fully in Jesus, both healing and salvation become possible.
Share stories from the Bible of those who trusted in the Lord and were delivered, healed, and made whole, also offer your own testimony so they can see His work in your life. When the time is right and hearts are open, invite them to witness the wonders of Godβs kingdom, how He answers prayer and works miracles among His people.
β€οΈ A Bible Study on Acts 8
Watch the video below to dive into Acts π Chapter 8, where Philipβs ministry in Samaria is highlighted. The study contrasts Simon the sorcererβs false wonders with the true miracles of God and explains the difference between water baptism and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It also brings clarity on the Holy Spirit being with, in, and upon a believer, while encouraging us not to get caught up in arguments over doctrine but to seek Godβs heart.
