Trying Hard, Getting Nowhere? The Holy Spirit Can Help
Sometimes in life, we wonder why certain things feel so difficult — why no matter how hard we try, we can’t seem to succeed. And even when we do, we’re often too exhausted to enjoy the victory.
The truth is, when we strive in our own strength, the weight is heavy. But when we rely on the Holy Spirit, we gain a helper, a guide, and a strength beyond our own.
Without the Holy Spirit, you can try to push through life in your own strength — and maybe you’ll manage for a while. But eventually, the weight becomes too much. You end up feeling drained, frustrated, and tired of trying. The more you push, the more hopeless it begins to feel.
But when you walk with the Holy Spirit, you are not carrying it alone.
He fights alongside you — “greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world” (
1 John 4:4).
He gives you strength when you are weak. Paul prays that God would “strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being” (
Ephesians 3:16).
He assures you that you still belong to God — “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children” (
Romans 8:16).
And He gives you peace in the middle of the struggle — “may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (
Romans 15:13).
Jesus Himself said that the Holy Spirit would be our Helper, our Teacher, and the one who reminds us of His truth when we need it most:
And even in moments of weakness — when you’re too tired to pray, or don’t even know what to say — the Spirit prays for you:
Maybe it’s time to stop trying to do it all alone. That is exactly what Jesus offered:
So how do you actually walk with Him?
You ask. Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (
Luke 11:13). It is not a matter of earning Him, or waiting until you are strong enough.
And then you keep in step. Paul puts it simply: “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit” (
Galatians 5:25). Not one decision, but a daily one — going to Him first, instead of after everything else has failed.
When the Holy Spirit guides you, you are never alone. He gives you the strength to move forward — not just for a day, but for the long run.
And the strength stays His. That is the point. You are not being asked to become strong enough. You are being asked to stop carrying it by yourself.
